Thermal decomposition
Calcium sulfate is heated to 1000 degrees Celsius to decompose, chemical formula: 2CaSO42CaO+2SO2↑+O2↑.
React with acid
Calcium sulfate reacts with concentrated sulfuric acid and dissolves into calcium hydrogen sulfate. The chemical equation is: CaSO4+H2SO4(concentrated)=Ca(HSO4)2.
React with gas
The calcium sulfate solution reacts with ammonia gas and carbon dioxide to form calcium carbonate precipitation and ammonium sulfate. The chemical equation is: H2O+CaSO4+2NH3+CO2=CaCO3+(NH4)2SO4.
React with salt
Calcium sulfate and potassium salt react at 80 degrees Celsius to generate potassium gypsum: K2SO4+CaSO4+H2OK2SO4·CaSO4·H2O; or K2SO4+5CaSO4+H2OK2SO4·5CaSO4·H2O.
The reaction of calcium sulfate and ammonium carbonate produces calcium carbonate precipitation and ammonium sulfate solution: CaSO4+2H2O+(NH4)2CO3=CaCO3+(NH4)2SO4.
